Not every home needs 200-amp service — but a lot of homes that think they're fine are quietly running out of capacity. If you're adding an EV charger, a heat pump, or a hot tub, or you're fighting nuisance trips and a full panel, it's worth knowing the signs. Here's how to tell, and what actually drives the cost.
Signs you may need an upgrade
Any one of these is a reason to have your service evaluated. Several together usually means it's time.
- You have 60A or 100A service and want to add an EV charger, heat pump, or hot tub
- Your panel is full — no open slots, or "double-tapped" breakers sharing a slot
- Breakers trip when several big appliances run at once
- You still have a fuse box or a panel from an unsafe brand
- Lights dim noticeably when large appliances start
- You're renovating, adding square footage, or finishing a garage or shop
- A home inspection or insurer flagged the service as undersized or outdated
100A vs 200A — which do you need?
| Your situation | Likely service |
|---|---|
| Smaller home, gas heat/water/cooking, no EV | 100A may be adequate |
| All-electric home, or adding EV / heat pump / hot tub | 200A recommended |
| Large home, electric heat plus EV plus shop | 200A, sometimes more |
The honest answer comes from a load calculation, not a guess. We add up your real and planned loads so you don't pay for capacity you'll never use — or upgrade only to run short again.
What drives the cost
A panel upgrade isn't a single fixed price, because several factors vary house to house:
- Whether just the panel changes, or the full service entrance and meter base too
- The condition of the grounding and bonding (older homes often need updates)
- Whether the utility service is overhead or underground
- Any code corrections uncovered once the panel is opened
- Permit and inspection fees
In South Carolina, a service or panel upgrade requires a permit and inspection, and the utility won't reconnect without it. We handle the permit and inspection as part of the job — be wary of anyone offering to skip it.
Next steps
If two or more of the signs above sound familiar, start with our panel upgrade service. Planning to charge a car at home? Pair it with EV charger installation. If your existing panel is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco unit, treat the upgrade as a safety priority.

How long does a 200A panel upgrade take?
Most residential service upgrades are completed in a single day, including the utility disconnect and reconnect. We coordinate the permit and inspection.
Will I lose power during the upgrade?
Yes, for several hours while we swap the panel and the utility disconnects and reconnects the service. We schedule it to minimize disruption.
Can I add an EV charger without upgrading my panel?
Sometimes — it depends on your existing load and available capacity. We run a load check first. If it's tight, we'll recommend the upgrade.
Is 200A always better than 100A?
Not necessarily — a smaller home with gas appliances may be fine on 100A. The right size comes from a load calculation. Call (843) 595-9236.
